Why Wait?

  • iPhone 2.0 software update is available for bootleg download. More info on MacRumors.
  • MobileMe system update is aviailable for bootleg download. More info on GearLive.
  • The iTunes App store is up, though not announced. You can find it by searching on iTunes for an application, or through an iTunes App Store link – like the previous one, or this one for Super Monkey Ball.

I’m installing the 2.0 software now, and so far so good. Also, the MobileMe update ran fine, but the Apple servers are still off-line.

What are the apps I grabbed already?

Refreshing the iPhone Tips & Tutorials Page

Since last July I have loosely been maintaining a tips and tutorials page for the iPhone. The page is basically a categorized list with some helpful links to popular web apps, how-tos, articles and hardware accessory stores — all for the iPhone.

In light of tomorrow’s rumored “iPhone! iPhone! iPhone!” keynote announcement, and the upcoming release of OSX iPhone 2.0, I figured it was time to update the page. But with your help please.

If you know of a link or two (or three) that you think would fit in, please send it on by emailing me at [email protected].

Thanks in advance.

It’s the Software, Stupid

It’s the Software, Stupid

Brett touches on exactly how I felt yesterday after watching the application demos at the SDK announcement:

And all this will be available to the entire installed iPhone base. No one gets left out. You do not have to buy another $500 device to get a few new features if you have an old model — just get the new software. […]

This seems so simple. But in the phone industry, this is revolutionary.

After watching the apps get demonstrated I had this “my iPhone is a sleeper agent” sort of feeling. Realizing there is way more under the hood which I, as a user, haven’t fully had the chance to experience yet. And, like Brett says, I don’t have to buy another $500 phone.

The first version of the iPhone may very well be the greatest 1.0 gadget released in history.

Weather on iPhone

Weather Underground has a very nice, iPhone optimized webpage. You can find out humidity, dew point, visibility, sunrise, sunset, detailed forecasts and warnings. It even has the large iPhone “slider buttons” for some of the settings such as animating the radar.

Another smart element is the #id links at the top of each section: “Current”, “Radar”, “Forecast” and “Warnings”. Not only can you can skip around between the sections, but each perspective’s section is identified by their title being in yellow (even if you scroll down to it).

I usually just use the Yahoo weather widget to check what the temperature will be and if I can wear flip-flops or not. But I’m adding this to my home screen for when I ever want to check anything more than just temperature.

Mint WebClip Icon

Mint WebClip Icon

Most people have Mint in a subdirectory like /mint. This is a problem if you want to set an iPhone favicon for your root domain, but change the favicon in subdirectories because the iPhone looks in the root directory for the favicon.

A joint effort over Twitter between Cameron and I to hack Mint to display the Mint Icon on your iPhone instead of a picture of your Mint page or the default WebClip you have uploaded to your root directory.

By “hack” I mean slightly edit, and by “joint effort” I mean I resized the 3 different colored Mint Icons to 57×57, and Cameron figured out the edit and wrote the tutorial.

UPDATE: If you’re still stuck with your site’s root folder’s WebClip try “Red X-ing” out of your Mint browser window, restarting your iPhone and then re-navigating to your Mint install.
